Somatic Symptoms in Children and Adolescents with Anxiety Disorders

Abstract
Objectives£ºThis study investigated the prevalence of somatic symptoms in children and adolescent with anxiety disorder.

Methods£ºThe subjects were 34 children and adolescents diagnosed with anxiety disorder in 3 psychiatric clinics in Daegu, and the control group were 34 normal children and adolescents. Participating subjects were assessed by psychiatrist using the Pediatric Anxiety Rating Scale.

Results£ºThe prevalence of somatic symptoms was 94.1% in anxiety disorder, and was 50% in normal control group. The mean numbers of somatic symptoms were 5.6 in anxiety group and 1.6 in control group. There was no significant difference in the number of somatic symptoms between boys and girls in anxiety group. However, there were significant differences in the numbers of somatic symptoms by age£»7.4 somatic symptoms in the age group of 13 or more in comparison to 4.0 in the age group of 12 or less. The reported somatic symptoms were dizziness(70.6%), palpitation(67.6%), abdominal pain or discomfort(58.8%), chest pain or discomfort(55.9%), and chills(50%). Additionally, there were close relationships between the severity of anxiety and the number of somatic symptoms, and between the severity of anxiety and the severity of somatic symptoms. The severity of somatic symptoms could predict the severity of anxiety.

Conclusion£ºThis study shows that somatic symptoms in children and adolescents with anxiety disorders are common and that there are significant relations between somatic symptoms and severity of anxiety.
